Old scanner to work with MS Vista?

I have a Visioneer 5800 USB flatbed scanner. I believe this model was
first introduced in early 2001. The 5800 is ancient by tech standards but
it works fine and does everything I need it to do.

Is there a website that will tell me if the driver that powers the
5800 is compatible with Windows Vista? The MS Vista Upgrade Advisor had no
info on this scanner. Visioneer long ago stopped providing tech support for
this scanner.

Well, there is your answer,
"Visioneer long ago stopped providing tech support for
this scanner. "

When You have installed Vista, then you can try to see if you can get your
old drivers to work.
Nobody knows yet.

Why not just keep using Windows XP?
Nothing in Vista is worth upgrading for, unless you are heavy into the
graphics in game playing.

There are not any new drivers for all of the peripherals in Windows Vista.
If a driver is not built in, then it will be a very long time before the
manufacturers get them written.

I've toyed with the idea of upgrading to Vista, but I frankly don't
have the nerve to do so right now. XP works just fine on my 6-month old PC,
and upgrading to a brand new operating system is often a frustrating (if not
hazardous) procedure. I would hate to have to buy a new scanner after
switching to Vista.

Same question about a Visioneer 7100 for my new "Vista-capable" computer.

My solution is to buy a Canon all-in-one. The scanner part probably won't
be any better (if that) but when I need the functionality of the 7100 it
will be attached to my previous (XP) computer, which becomes my back-up.
At that, I don't intend to apply the Vista upgrade until the bugs have
been squashed and developers start writing Vista-speciific software with
features I want.

Epson is not writing Vista drivers for scanners that are merely one
generation old, i.e. they have been replaced by an identical scanner with a
different model number. Epson does not even have Vista drivers yet for
printers and scanners that are current models.
If Vuescan supports your scanner you may be in luck.
However until Microsoft stops supporting XP there is no rational reason for
anyone to use Vista. It is slower, has little driver support and does not
work with most video, CD/DVD authoring and virus programs.
Vista actually has less support for gaming than XP: anyone with EX and other
surround sound features in their sound cards is in for a surprise.

The following is the reply I just got from Epson.
