Old *.pst files recovery

My home desktop running Windows XP and Office 2003 failed the motherboard
leaving all my old email (pst) files unaccessible. I have a full backup
using Ghost 10 and have recovered the outlok file to a new folder on a
laptop. However the laptop is only running Ooutlook 2002. When I try to
import the files from the new folder I get the message "The file is not
compatible with the version of the Personal Folders information System,
Contact your system adminstrator"

The data on the old emails is important. I am about to purchase a new
desktop running Vista and Office 2007 (god help me) My questions are: 1 am i
likely to be able to recover the old emails into the new system (ie is the
thing likely to be forward compatible) and 2. If not how the hell do I
recover the info in the old emails ?

Any advice greatly appreciated

Office 2007 will read Office 2003 pst files..

From another forum far, far away..

"First, forget importing from a PST. That's never a good idea. Just OPEN
the PST with File>Open>Outlook Data File.

To do that, however, you must copy the PST to the hard drive and remove the
read-only attribute. The message you see is typical of a write-protected
PST.

Thanks Mike - I tried that - got same message. Outlook 2002 will not open the
file created with Outlook 2003. Is this a known problem and is it likely that
Office 2007 (Outlook 2007) will open the file ?

Rambo, I don't think that pst files are backwards compatible.. you should
not have the same problem when reading 2003 pst files into 2007.. many have
already done it..

Mike is correct, Outlook 2007 will have no trouble opening a 2003 .PST file.
Should you decide to get Outlook 2007, DO NOT IMPORT this .PST file, copy it
to a folder (DO NOT OVERWRITE any existing .PST files) , open Outlook, and
connect it to this .PST file.

Reconnect your old Outlook data file

Importing a .PST file almost always corrupts the Outlook profile in use,
plus you lose the following information:

1. Custom Forms
2. Custom Views
3. Connections between contacts and activities
4. Received dates on mail
5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar
6. Journal connections
7. Distribution Lists
