Hi,

I have a very old notebook that support DDR ram (NEC E660), the
specification saying that it only support max. 1G ram. Now I am running
256Mx2 ram. Can I upgrade it to 1Gx1 or can only upgrade it with 512Mx2 ram.

Thanks a lot.

Since all the memory places I saw in a quick search only sell 128, 256, and
512MB modules for it and no 1GB ones, I would guess that 512x2 is what you
need.

No, you need 2 x 512MB

It might also depend on how accessible the modules are. One
other NEC laptop of that era, has one socket accessible to the
user and one is hidden. It might mean leaving the internal one
at 256MB and adding a new 512MB to the exposed slot. Computers
have also had the internal RAM chips soldered to the motherboard,
so the internal RAM might not be removable or upgradeable.

So the biggest easy config might be 256MB + 512MB.

I can't find a manual. The legacy portion of the necam.com site
isn't working right now.

The table at the bottom of this page, mentions max memory of 1GB total
for the IGP 340M. The max memory wasn't actually listed on the page
reserved for the IGP 340M.

This HP has a IGP 340M...

and the memory configuration for it is shown here.

It would appear from that memory table, that each slot has a 512MB limit.

Generally, yes, but not always. My last MB had 4 memory slots, 4GB max, but
would accept 2-2GB modules, leaving the other 2 slots vacant. It was an ASUS
or Gigabyte board, but for the life of me, I can't remember the model
number, or find any of the old literature for it. I remember it had an AMD
K7 processor, is all.
