old NIC still referenced

When configuring my new network card, XP still shows references to the old
one that I have removed. How can I make XP forget about the old card?

It doesn't appear in the device manager network adapter list.

I have created a system variable named DEVMGR_SHOW_HIDDEN_DEVICES and given
it a value of "1" but even when I select "Show hidden devices" in the View,
the old 3com card doesn't appear for me to remove it. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

Have a read of this:

Device Manager Does Not Display Devices That Are Not
Connected to the Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315539

You might like to use this article to force Device Manager to show the
nonpresent devices.
The nonpresent ghosts should now reveal themselves.
You could then delete the nonpresent network adapters from device manager.
