Old news articles on Outlook

Outlook does not contain news articles as it has no news reading
functionality, it uses Outlook Express. For help with that, post in one of
the OE groups.

Jim

For Outlook Express not Outlook select Tools, Options, Maintenance,
Clean Up Now, Reset. You will then need to Synchronise.

How do you set the counter back to get old news articles when using Outlook?

No version of Outlook has ever had the ability to read newsgroups. By
default it uses Outlook Express in what it confusingly tells you is
Outlook News, but you can change from that default to another
newsreader.

Your headers make it clear that you are using Outlook Express as your
newsreader.

My personal view is that if you are looking for older messages, the
best way to find what you are looking for is to use Google advanced
search at http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?q=&

Thanks.

Sorry, This is the first time I've used Outlook EXPRESS and didn't even
know there was an Outlook without the express attached.

What on earth does "synchronize" mean? Note I'm not asking how to find it
or how to click on it. I'm asking "what is it?"

Ahem, doesn't "Clean Up Now" wipe out all your news articles? I don't want
to do that, just go back and get some old articles some distance back into
some newsgroup. Several other news readers have a setting for that.

I had no idea not adding Express to Outlook would stir up such a reaction.

I've never needed Google groups before except for some age old message I
happen to remember from years back.

I've just started using Outlook Express. I remembered that occasionally in
the past I deleted an article or two I later wanted. With other news
readers I could click up a fetch dialog and tell it to get, for instance, 5
or 50 or 500 of the most recent old articles.

Is this impossible with Outlook EXPRESS?

Jim

It removes all existing news messages and replaces them with new copies
of the same. However, you need to be aware that news messages are only
held on a server for a limited period of time. This period varies from
one server to another. Messages from the Microsoft Public newsgroup
servers are held for 90 days but you will find other servers only
holding messages for a few days.

You can experiment by moving the messages from one newsgroup to a user
created sub-folder of Local Folders. This will be a mail folder and once
there the messages can be read but not moved back to a news folder.

Another option is to select Tools, Options, Get next ???? headers which
will download headers for messages on the server not previously
downloaded. You will, however, only get headers for messages previously
downloaded by resetting.

Another option is to read messages in Google:

Synchronise is the process of your computer checking with the server
whether there are new messages available and, if yes, downloading them.
The New messages option gives messages since the last synchronisation.
All gives any not previously downloaded i.e new messages plus any not
downloaded previously. You can choose headers only or headers plus the
bodies for the headers. With headers you can limit downloads to any
number between 50 and 999 or have all available.

Weird. You'd think it could do that without being told.

Thanks

Hm. And this thread (Old news articles) is about how to get messages that
have ALREADY been downloaded and mistakenly deleted. Like I said elsewhere,
most recent old 5 or 50 or 500 (or whatever). A common feature in various
readers.

Thanks

It's not so much that it's a reaction, but rather that Outlook and
Outlook Express are two very different programs. So it's very
important that you understand which you are using and that those of us
who are trying to help you also understand which of them you are
asking about.

I've never needed Google groups before except for some age old message I

I think "needed" is very much the wrong word here. Even if you don't
"need" it, a googlegroups search is often a very useful and helpful
tool. It's the best way to get information about previous posts, posts
by a particular person, or about posts on a particular subject

Personally I use a different newsreader, and it's been long enough
since I last used Outlook Express that I'm not a good source of
information for you there. Someone else here may help you, but the
best way to ask such a question is in the Outlook Express newsgroup,
rather than here in a Windows XP one. The Outlook Express newsgroup is
where the Outlook Express experts hang out.

Huh? Old articles would be "Get Previous."
Get Headers get headers older than the ones last loaded. If you read
300 messages at a time, you'll read the 300 most recent messages. Then
Headers will get you the next older 300 messiages.
Set th # to say 100 or even 10, to make it easy to count & watch the
dates. Reasonably easy to see.
Set it to read ALL, and there won't be any headers left to get. Ít'll
download them all at once.
