old/new HD with XP Home

I've just purchased the full XP Home version to upgrade
from ME. Have also bought a 120GB HD to replace the 40GB
HD (which I suspect is going wacky & is about to fail)that
came with my computer. What I THINK I want to do is
install the new HD as master, change the old HD to slave,
boot from the CD & install XP on the new, larger HD. If
this is a good way to go, is there a way I transfer all
programs from the old HD to the new (in case the old IS
about to fail)without having to go through the one-by-one
method of installing the programs on the new drive? Or, is
this plan a bad idea from the start?

Why? Since you own Me, you should have bought the Upgrade
version, which is identical (the only difference is that to use
it for a clean installation, you have to insert the Me CD as
proof of ownership) and much cheaper. If it's not too late, you
should return it and get the Upgrade instead.

No (except possibly for a very occasional tiny self-contained
program). You'll need to reinstall everything.

I purchased the full version because of the fear that the
original HD was going to fail, and that I'd have to start
from scratch with a new HD. Since ME came bundled with the
computer as the OS when new, I don't have an ME CD, per se.

The only possible way for your programs to work is to copy the old HD to the
new, then do an upgrade. It might save you some time now, but in the long
run, you'd be much happier with a fresh install of everything on the new
drive.
