Old Laptop LCD screens

Hi,

I've got at least 3 old laptops (pentiums and 486's) and was wondering if
their LCD screens are of any use. to put in a car or as a second monitor for
my current pc for example

The short answer is no.

The long one is that if you google past, similar questions
you will find the numerous reasons why it won't work,
primarily that you need the specific display driver (which
is hardware, not software in this context) the notebook
uses.

If you want to use the ENTIRE notebook platform (board and
display driver) to run the LCD, that'd work. A 486 might be
underpowered but a Pentium ~ 166 may be able to do MP3 given
the right software? Problem is finding software that's both
efficient and tailored to a minimalistic GUI or menuing
suitable for car use. For the desktop, you'd probalby be as
well off with a cheap CRT, old LCD screens really weren't
very good.
