I've just bought a new PC, and had hoped that I'd be able to put my old HD
in it and continue (after loading new drivers etc). It fails while booting
in Safe Mode on the file crcdisk.sys, although this may be a red herring.

I've never had a problem with this procedure before, at least with major
hardware changes. Any thoughts?

You can get around the drive controller mismatches in a number of ways, with
varying degrees of success. Realistically though, the drive controllers are
just one small fraction of the devices that will be different between the
two machines, and you'd get the best results by going further and looking at
deployment tools.. specifically sysprep.

Truly the best results would be from a clean install.
