I bought a new hardisk and install XP on it. It went
smooth. Then I put my old hardisk (Win98) as slave. XP
sees my old hardrive and assign a drive letter, but I
can't access it and XP needs to format it. Why? and how
can I access it from XP without reformating it.

Hi - I am glad to see this message. I would like to add a
comment to it.
I am having the same issue, but the hard drive was
already within my configuration (Win 2000 Pro)when I
upgraded to XP Pro ... it should of been detected.
Is anyone out there to help us?

Was the disk set up with a program that came with the disk like Maxtor's
MaxBlast? If it was maybe the program did something to the hard drive
that Windows XP does not recognize. I have had no problems moving hard
drives to Windows XP but don't use the disk setup programs either.

No, I didn't use any of the vendor's disk set up programs.
Don't have any. Additional info: my HDs total of 60GB is
not too large for XP to handle, right. Both of them are
Seagate. I've also installed XP SP1a. On the XP's Disk
Management the old HD was recognized as drive E, healthy,
no format stated ,100% free(?), but I just can't access
it. I switched back the master jumper to Win98 and I can
see my old files are still intact (80% disk used).

The only other thing I can think of is have you loaded the drivers for
the motherboard and especially the IDE controller?
