old files/documents in word 97

Have just purchased a new sony laptop with pre-installed
XP home. All my old documents that I need to use
regularly saved in word and backed upto CD and flopy will
only appear in notepad form. This programme doesn't allow
me to add page numbers, headers/footers, re-format text
etc. Is there any way I can get this changed so my XP
prog can read these documents files in their original
Word 97 format and allow me to make changes to them?

Hi Clive,

You will need to install "Word". It is not part of the XP operating system
nor any other OS.

Hi Clive,
Word 97 will work fine on WinXP Home... or you can upgrade to MS Office XP
or 2003
