If you have some time to waste rather than watch yet another
mind-numbing stupid commercial on television, you can see OldDuke's
(that's one word "OldDuke", not the 2 words shown by gardenerstouch)
mind-numbing posts at:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...ft.public.windowsxp.hardware#402b6d3e7b7d27f1

Apparently he has self-nominated himself as the "what is on-topic here"
netcop for this newsgroup. Not because he occasionally notes that a
topic doesn't belong in this group but because that is all he ever says
in his few posts totalling all of 27 starting all of 3 weeks ago (oh
yeah, he's the expert, for sure, uh huh).

OldDuke is too stupid and/or too lazy to even notice there is no non-OS
specific microsoft.public.hardware newsgroup (carried by Microsoft's own
NNTP server). I'm not sure troll quite suffices to describe OldDuke's
posts. Most trolls have a bit more intelligence. Boring is more
accurate of his posts. He's a broken record: click, "off-topic for this
newsgroup", click, "off-topic this newsgroup", click, "off-topic",
click, "off-topic", ad nauseum.

Like watching commercial television/cable programming, he's just like
the advertisement noise that you have to deal with. However, it is easy
to ignore his off-topic "ads". Even you can killfile in WLM.

Oops, had the wrong URL in the clipboard when I pasted. OldDuke's post
history here is at:

As an aside;
It's a really good in OE when you "block" someone, you get the choice of
removing ALL their post form the NG :-)
....quite satisfying when they all vanish !

However, there are THOUSANDS of hardware forums on the web. ANYBODY
with ANY intelligence (obviously not you though) can find them and ask
there off topic questions THERE.

OH, and I've been around a lot longer than three weeks. I've been
posting for YEARS. Nice try, though.

What does any of that have to do with the XP operating system? Nothing.
Why do you insist on posting your drivel here.

Well, but wait a minute, Dave. What else is he actually *capable* of
doing, here? Now that wasn't very nice of you.

Just be careful whether or not you really want to killfile someone just
to get rid of the noise. Since you won't see their posts, they get the
last say when they reply to your post and others will see it. Killfile
the ones that are habitual and well known to be killfiled by many other
regulars (newbies will still see their posts, though). Rather than
block their posts, you may want to instead colorize them so your eyes
normally slide by their posts, like making them silver on white. That
way, you don't lose the hierarchy of a [sub]thread but aren't likely to
read their post (unless someone else quotes them). OldDuke is less than
a month old and his posts are boringly repetitive rather than troll-like
.... so far.

Why? This hardware newsgroup is entirely adequate to the task.

It certainly seems like it.

Hmmm. Close, but a pale immitation of the real thing.

Sadly not. Like any newsnet ****wit, he regularly changes his posting name
to ensure that his crap has as wide an audience as possible. Only a
mentally ill obsessive would do that.

No, you haven't quite got the rage, venom and vitriol of the original.

OldDuke is not a troll in the accepted usenet use of the term. A troll is
someone who post something with the sole purpose of creating an extended
thread. OldDuke doesn't do that as he posts exactly the same post over and
over again. He is just a plain old usenet nazi.

I studied psychology, and can tell you that OldDuke is the sort of person
who seethes with rage that someone has dared to post something that falls
outside of *his* concept of what is permissible (you can see it in his
posts). As has been previously noted by others and myself, this behaviour
is an absolute text book case of a type of mental illness. There has been
some discussion as to whether OldDuke is a child or a grown up. OldDuke
himself claims to be in his 40's, but if that is true, he certainly
demonstrates the mental age of someone aged around 12 (give or take a couple
of years). He certainly seems to believe that he is the (self appointed)
arbiter of what is permissible. He is completely unable to admit that he is
wrong as he keeps insisting that he is right and it is *everyone else* who
is wrong.

Read the GROUP TITLE. Then tell me how I am WRONG. I'm not, but
don't understand you mentally limited folk to understand that.

Read the GROUP TITLE. Then tell me how I am WRONG. I'm not, but
don't understand you mentally limited folk to understand that.

If you are referring to your posts that say something along the lines of,
"...meaning the question is out of place HERE. Ask elsewhere." <-- then in
the majority of cases (if not all) you are technically correct.

This thread was spawned not by that particular repeating comment made by you
in many guises (NoConsequence, etc.) This thread was started by the person
you responded to with this, "Don't post binaries in a text newsgroup. I
didn't want your crappy pictures on my hard drive." which may/may not be
technically sound depending on what newsreader you utilize, your specific
configuration and how much of a nervous clicker/curious individual you are.
(You seem to use Forte Agent 2.0/32.652.)

I do not believe anyone has a problem with your technical correctness with
the newsgroup title and telling people they may have posted in the incorrect
group for their question - I believe it is more of the read-into attitude
with which you post said comments.

They may or may not be reading into your text - as you may be posting them
with no emotion what-so-ever - the ALL UPPERCASE WORDS would lead one to
another conclusion - but could just be emphasis as well. The way your post
is really your concern and no one elses...

It boils down to this...

Just like you have a choice of whether or not to read any given posting on
any given newsgroup and decide whether or not you are going to post a
response to the postings you do read - they have to make a choice whether or
not to read and respond to any given posting.

You have chosen - for some reason - to pick what one _could_ call the 'easy
ones' and reply to them with the "you posted in the incorrect group" answer.
No further direction is given by you on how to locate the right newsgroup
group nor is any further effort put out by you (nor required - again - all
your choice) to point them in the 'right' direction. One could call these
the easy ones because they require no special knowledge really. You look at
the title of the newsgroup, read the entirety of the posting and make a
judgment call on whether that posting is out of place or not.

Now - when someone is looking for help - they may already be in a somewhat
vulnerable state. They don't know something, they admit they don't know
something and are hoping that they might be able to learn something by
asking a question. Their emotions may already be on edge. Therefore - they
may or may not see your reply as a personal attack. Then they have to
choose whether to ignore it (usually the right course) or respond.

Those who come to the defense of these people (whether or not the original
poster you were referring to ever responds) usually have one of two
purposes. They are actually defending the original poster and also wish to
provide further help (or at least guidance to the original poster) or they
just do not like you/your attitude and will proceed to attack you. That is
their choice.

This whole discussion - see the link at the top - technically has no
business in the microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware newsgroup. It's here,
though; and it will be archived for many years to come.

You seem to choose - more often or not - to provide the "wrong place"
response. Others might choose to provide the same response but with an
added "but if you try this - you might find what you need" at the end
(either just to soften the blow or genuinely help.) Many others likely
choose to just not respond at all. To each their own.

So - while this discussion has carried on way too long (and my comments are
sure to offend someone in someplace and they will have to choose whether or
not to respond - thus possibly making it carry further) - the fact is that
no one can really be sure of why you respond the way you do other than you
(and if is malicious or just stating a fact) - all they can be sure of is
how they interpreted your response and how they choose to respond (or not)
to it.
As to anything else (inference of intelligence, etc) - that's all a guess.
You are posting - where, without some research - we don't know who you
really are or what you can really do or know nor do you know whom we are and
what we can really do or know.

We do know that this particular newsgroup was setup to help people with
hardware related problems (drivers more than likely) having to do with
Windows XP. It is a public newsgroup and can be accessed through various
means from just about anywhere in the world. There are likely many archives
of it - the longest kept likely being the Google Groups version:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware/

In the end - you will keep doing what you want, I will keep doing what i
want and so on. Sometimes someone might respond to you - but in the
majority - they will likely ignore your responses and/or move on and you
will never know if it was because of your response or because they figured
it out/found a better place/found the answer elsewhere/etc... Some people
just like to argue. ;-)

Good luck!

You are wrong because the majority have decreed that you are wrong. Simple
as that. Now accept it. You have no authority to decide what is acceptable
in this newsgroup and what isn't. You don't own it. You don't even
contribute to it.
