I believe Windows XP fails to have a DOS option.

Will such games run in Windows XP...or am i better to stay
with Windows 98SE ?

Hi Mike,

Holding yourself back technologically for the sake of one game
is a huge sacrifice. When you install XP, you can install it side
by side with 98SE in what's called a dual boot. That way you
can benefit from today's technology, without losing yesterdays. ;-)

War in Russia should work in Windows XP even if it's a DOS game.

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and: http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm :-)

if you want a good game spend $10 and find Sierra
Thrillride pinball. uses gamepad or keyboard has lots of
settings and tons of features. full screen and audio is
real good. stores best scores.

I believe there are a few DOS alternative solutions out
there for windows XP that will allow you to run DOS games
under XP but not very many. Those programmed with TP and
run on a processor of 200mhz or faster will fail to run
resulting in a Runtime 200 error.

I've run many DOS-games with the help of two programs:
1. VDMSound http://ntvdm.cjb.net/
2. Abandon loader (needs VDMS)
http://www.angelfire.com/realm/zeroone/abandon.htm

VDMS is a sound emulator (sound problems causes many DOS-games to crash),
and Abandon Loader is a excellent program to configure both VDMS and
compatibility things...
