Hello there.

The main trouble I'm facing is that I can't get it to have my contacts
sorted by "Last name".

I do following steps to create a new contact:
in the "New contact" window, I click on the "Name..." Button and write
"NAME LASTNAME", then press OK;
in the field "Email Address" I type the email address.

Now I'm seeing at "Name...": "NAME LASTNAME"
and at "File As" I have: "LASTNAME, NAME" (yes, there *is* a comma!).

At "Display as" I see "NAME LASTNAME (EMAILADDRESS)", whereas on some
clients I just see "NAME LASTNAME" without email address.

I then "Save and close" this contact window.
Then I open the Address Book and see
NAME LASTNAME - NAME LASTNAME (EMAILADDRESS) - EMAILADDRESS - SMTP
(these are the four displayed fields).

Now, HOW may I sort the records with "LASTNAME, NAME" (as defined in
"File As")?

Many thanks in advance...

Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing directories or address
books>Next. Select the Outlook Address Book and click Change. Select the
sort order there. Stop and restart Outlook.

Thank you, seems to work!
Is it also possible to have another "template" for the "Display as"
column? I'm asking this because as I now sorted the first column
(LASTNAME, NAME), I'm still getting the default "NAME LASTNAME
(EMAILADDRESS)" display in the second column...

No, it is not possible by Outlook. The field "Display As" will be
always created by FIRSTNAME LASTNAME (EMAILADDRESS).

With the tool ChangeNames you can modify all existing fields and set
the automatically change for new or changed contacts to have always
the desired format:

The Address Book interface will always show the Display As field in the
"Display Name" column. There are third-party apps (like ChangeNames from
<http://www.outlook-stuff.com/component/option,com_docman/task,doc_details/gid,1/Itemid,2/>)
that can be used to modify the DIsplay As field en masse.
