OL2003: How do I turn off the automatic receive at startup?

Adrielle

I have a spam tool (Mailwasher) that now (fine-tuned) deletes 99% of the
spam before it reaches Outlook. So I now need to run Mailwasher first, then
ask Outlook to receive email. Fine with me, it is a small price to pay.

But there are times that I want to get into Outlook without the laborious
task of ridding myself of spam (it is like a spreading cancer, eh?), e.g. to
look up a contact. But when I try to get into Outlook, it ALWAYS
sends/receives at startup. So if I forget to run mailwasher first, or want
to get into Outlook quickly, all that spam comes into the mailbox. [Of
course, since my email account is IMAP, after the next time I run mailwasher
it cleans my laundry. But it is an icky feeling letting some of that garbage
into Outlook at all.]

I have tried fiddling with every send/receive setting that I can find, and
it continues to stubbornly send/receive on startup no matter what. I CAN
affect how frequently it send/receives while I am within Outlook, but not
this damned automatic receive on startup. In the documentation it tantalizes
me with the idea that if I had MS Exchange I could regulate all of this more
precisely with off-line folders but I don't have that option.

Thanks for any help. If I don't respond politely please know that for some
reason I cannot see all of the messages in the MS newsgroups within OL
Express, otherwise I would read it and respond graciously. Gracias!

If you disable the send/receive interval (i.e. "every XX minutes") in your
Send/Receive Group(s), it shouldn't do an automatic send/receive at startup
either.

Thank you for responding, I appreciate it.

At google.com I discovered that this question of "to send/receive or not to
send/receive at startup" has a long and glorious history in this newsgroup,
and the stock answer is the one that you gave to me, turning off the
automatic send/receive every X minutes.

Unfortunately I had already tried that prior to posting. I have have also
turned off everything else I can think of, to no avail. I have also tried
creating a new send/receive group in the hope that mine was corrupted
(312336 - Outlook is not performing automatic send/receive at startup due to
damaged send/receive group). None of this affects my sending/receiving. No
matter what settings I change, Outlook does an automatic send/receive at
startup, and also continues to send/receive while Outlook is active, which
it should not (see settings below).

Hopefully you or someone else knows of a setting that I've missed, or
perhaps there is something relevent to this automatic send/receive that only
affects IMAP email accounts.

These are the switches that I know of that I have turned off to try and
disable send/receive at startup.

X = checked, O = unchecked
------------------------------
In <Tools> <Options>
O <Send immediately when connected>
In <Tools> <Send/Receive settings> nothing is checked, i.e.
When outlook is online
O Include this group in send/receive
O Schedule an automatic send/receive every _ minutes
O Perform an automatic send/receive when exiting
When outlook is offline
O Include this group in send/receive
O Schedule an automatic send/receive every _ minutes

In other words nothing is checked. I have only one (IMAP) email account in
only one send/receive group, with standard settings for that account.

I'm not very familiar with IMAP, so I'll see if I can find an answer on this
from someone who might know whether that would be a factor here. In the
meantime, are you using Outlook 2002 or 2003 (just in case that's relevant
also)?

OK -- after doing more research on this, I think I have gotten a couple of
possible solutions for you. Since IMAP is a server-based system where
messages are actually stored on the server rather than on your local
machine, it's "by design" that you are always going to see it being updated
with new messages if you are connected to it. It's not like a POP3 account
where you are actually pulling new messages down from the server to your
local machine. Since you only have one e-mail account, you can't really
remove it from the Send/Receive groups...but in reality, the Send/Receive
Group settings don't really have any effect on an IMAP account. Therefore,
the only way for you to NOT get the IMAP updates is to not connect to your
IMAP server at all.

You can try one of the following methods to better control whether you want
to connect your IMAP account (and thus view your entire message list,
including new messages) when starting Outlook:

1) Set Outlook to work offline. If you choose "work offline" before you
exit Outlook, it should remain offline when you open it next. Only connect
to your IMAP account when you need it, then choose Work Offline again before
you close Outlook.

2) Change your connection type for that mail account. Go to Tools | E-mail
Accounts, select View or change existing e-mail accounts, click Next, then
select the account in the list, click Change, click the More Settings
button, click the Connection tab, and choose "Connect using Internet
Explorer's or a 3rd party dialer". This should prevent Outlook from
checking the IMAP account at startup. Might be a good solution if you don't
want to have to remember to choose "Work Offline" every time you want to
close Outlook.

I hope one of these works for you. Please post back and let me know.
