OL 2003 with Exchange 2000 - Contacts count totals differ ? ?

6 PCs setup with OL 2003 using public contacts/calendar listing from
Exchange server 2000. Site has been up for 3 years but OL2003 is new upgrade
over OL 2000 on desktops so they have some personal folders too.

Two questions:

first, as we went around doing the upgrades to each machine we noticed that
the total count for contacts from the domain exchange server increased
higher and higher. This is the total contact count showing up on the outlook
today page where we put some shortcuts for folders, public contacts,
calendar, etc. The first machine had about 1800 contacts showing as the
total count in the upper right corner of outlook today. By the time we got
to the last PC (which was a new hire without any upgrade or previous
personal folders) it showed a bold number for the total count of public
contacts at about 2200. What's the mystery to this? why would the total
public contacts count keep increasing as more systems came up and on-line to
the domain/Echange server? Strange.

second: when we create a new mail message and then select the public
contacts folder we want to be able to type the first few letters of the
company name to search by company name but it does not do this....it appears
to sort/display the contacts by first or last name and this is no good for
us. How can we change this so that when we try to search the contacts (or
when typing a "TO" field for the new email) it searches and sorts by
company name?

Lastly, we desire everyone to use the public contacts folders so is there a
way to hide these personal contacts / folders on the OL2003 panes?

Any help will be especially appreciated......you can post here but if
possible please send email to dallasguy8ATyahooDOTcom

Thanks!

Not sure about your first issue. Do they eventually show the same number of
contacts on all the machines or is this different per machine as well?

By default names are sorted by "first name, last name". If you want to
change this to "last name, first name" do the following;
Go to Control Panel-> Mail-> E-mail Accounts-> View or change existing
directories or address books-> select Outlook Address Book-> Change.
At the bottom you can set the way the names are sorted.

And for the last issue; no, you cannot. You can however change the default
location on where to save contacts in the Address Book options

No, the total count for the shared [domain-Name] Exchange Contact is
different on each machine. There are about five of these little text
shortcuts up in the right hand corner of the Outlook today : Domain name
Exchange Calendar, contacts, inbox, etc.....each of them shows a total
count. As one would guess, the local inbox, and other local personal folders
all have different total counts. But the shared public [Domain] for contacts
coming off the exchange server is different at each PC.

As I mentioned the strange thing I noticed was that the first machine we
setup has the smallest total count and then each increases by about 12-20 up
until the last machine which has the highest total count. I was wondering if
this total was actually taking some kind of GRAND total of shared contacts
from the server + local personal + shared local contacts of other previous
PCs = total count. This would explain the growing total count. But then that
makes no sense : 1) why would it not eventually all equal the same if it
counted other local PC contacts and 2) why would it put this total on the
listing on the count specific for the shared domain/exchange contacts?

Yes we can sort the contacts name-First/Last, name Last/First,
etc.......that's fine - but we wanted to be able to type the company name to
view/sort display listings by company name and this is what we are having
trouble with. specifically - I want to send an email to j.doe at xyz
company. I would like to also copy some folks at xyz company.

I will try the links provided to see what I can find.

thanks
