A man in a store claims Okidata produces the best color photo output, and
replacement cartridges cost half what HP etc. cost for equivelent page
counts.

True?

How's text/graphics? Sometimes a printer that does one well doesn't score
well on the other.

And, or course, how's long-term reliability?

Hi Brendan,
About a year and a half ago I finaly got totaly fed up with Inkjets and all
their ink problems and cart costs, got tired of refilling tiny carts that
hold next to nothing.

I put up with it for photos but now decided that photo work was no longer a
real need, but good day to day printing in color with no hassles was my main
priority.

Decided to buy a good color laser, I researched and looked at Oki, Samsung,
Brother, HP, Lexmark,Konica/Minolta and a few others, Had the stores run me
off a color photo on each one to compare.

Well I decided that the Oki C5150n had the best looking photo in this price
range, I paid $699.00 Canadian, not the cheapest of the bunch but I wanted
quality and a printer that would last me for 10 years or so.

A couple of local dealers and repair depots claimed that it was one of the
most trouble free brands on the market Also there is a fellow on this ng
called "Tony" who says they are very trouble free, BTW he seems to be the
most Knowlegeable and helpfull person here.

Text is perfect on this machine and it does a pretty good job on photos,Not
up to inkjet standars but pretty darn good for a laser I use a good 9 mil
gloss LASER photo paper from Staples and am quit happy.

I like the Led system, no finicky mirrors to get dirty and out of alignment,
Also it is a single pass versus 4 pass printer, It has a straight trough
paper path for heavy stock or envelopes, built in networking which is great
as all three computers in my home can print from it.

I believe it is now replaced by a newer model, not sure if it is the c3200
or c5400, You would have to research and find the one that suits your
budget.

As for replacement carts, Again you will have to research prices amoung
diferent brands, but as all Color toner carts they are NOT cheap, But new
compatible carts from LDproducts or suppliesguys are very reasonable.

All in all I find this unit to be the best Printer investment I have ever
made.

Life is Good with an OKI.

Brendan, the OKI colour lasers are very good indeed.
The latest releses are the C5600,C5700,C5800 and C5900, these are quieter than
the previous modles due to a redesign of the drum drive. But before you decide
have a look at the HP Laserjet 2605 and see if you can get a dealer to provide
some samples from the OKI and HP printers. The HP printer really impresses me,
it is quieter, uses single pass technology like the OKI range.
The cost per page is comparable for both printers, both use single pass, the HP
fuser is not user replaceable unlike the OKI which is user replaceable but for
some documents the 2605 produces better results. The 2605 however has a single
sheet multipurpose tray whilst the OKI's have a more versatile multiple sheet
multipurpose tray. You really should try to have a look at the two before you
decide.
