Howdy,

I have an OKI 320 Turbo that we use for extremely low volume
(occasional mailing labels, name tags, etc.)

Almost every time we use it, the very first line of text is slightly
distorted, looking almost like the line was italicized.

If we print, say, ten mailing labels, the first line of the first
label is likely to have this problem. If we then immediately print the
ten labels again, all is fine, including the very first line.

What might be the cause, and might there be a solution?

Thanks for any help,

IMO, it's the printhead starting up after sitting idle for
a long time. It probably sticks just a little bit on its
first pass. The solution would then be to use the printer
every day. :-)

It may be slack in the mechanism. You could try turning off
bidirectional printhead movement if it's side-to-side slack. If form
feed length is programmed into the printer for one label height,
pressing FF for one label might also take up the slack.

Or you could just print one sample label at the start of each batch.

Thanks for any help,

You might try a few things to fix it. 1) remove printhead and clean in
alcohol bath. Let it soak in 99% Isopropanole for about 10 minutes.
Remove from bath and let air dry for 10 minutes, then blow it out with
compressed air. Let dry for an hour afterwards then blow out again
with compressed air to make sure there is no residual liquid left
inside of the head. 2) While waiting for printhead to dry, wipe print
shaft completley clean and relubricate with light oil. Make sure to
spread oil across entire shaft. 3) remove platen and clean with Rubber
Renue or some other such product. DO NOT clean with alcohol. 4) Make
sure that there is no slack in the rubber drive belt that moves the
printhead across the shaft. Adjust if necessary. These measures
should help you out.
