I have a PC running XP Home SP1. Unlike many instructions I have read
on the Internet, this is how I clean out my TEMP files:

1) Click Start button
2) Click Run
3) Type %temp%
4) Click OK
5) Delete anything listed

Is this method safe and okay? It was told to me by a tech from McAfee
years ago when I had trouble updating their anti-virus program. Just
thought I'd ask because I've never seen those steps mentioned as a way of
cleaning out temp files.

Hey there,

You can clean your Temp. files by:

1) Open up Internet Explorer
2) Go to Tools > Internet Options
3) Under the "Temporary Internet files" heading click on "Delete Files"

*Note: This may take a couple of mintues, don't worry if you system hangs.*

Thanks and best of luck!

Yes, that's ok - it just deletes your local temp store. It has the same
effect as opening Windows Explorer to:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\local settings\temp

then clicking edit\select all\file\delete.

Yes, it's fine.

It was told to me by a tech from
McAfee years ago when I had trouble updating their anti-virus
program. Just thought I'd ask because I've never seen those steps

That's because it's just one way of getting to that particular
folder. It's an easy way, but other than that, no way is better
than any other.

That's fine. You can automate the process by using a VB script created by
Bill James.

http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

Halfway down the page you'll see Delete Temp Files. Download it and just
click on it, no install required. I've used it for years.

It works, but subdirs have to deleted individually...
