I'd like to think I can do this.... I have windows xp on both computers and
have "remote desktop" enabled on both. Still can't connect. I hear people
talking about having to open/forward port 3389, but have NO clue what they
are talking about! Please step me simply. Also, once I do this, when I go
to connect, I assume that I type in the ip address of the computer I'm
wanting to connect to, my name (which is added as a user to the remote
computer) and my password. Is it necessary to enter the domain (I don't
think I have anything like that set up)?

Any simple instructions appreciated! (Just think of my as reallly
blonde.....)
Thanks

You don't need the domain.

At each end of this hookup, you have XP Pro machines connected to the
Internet, right?

How do they connect? What devices are involved--what kind of Internet
connection?

Usually (but not always, else we wouldn't have MSBlaster, et al)--there's
some device involved which either is explicitly a firewall, or which has
some of the attributes of a firewall. Perhaps this is the ICF firewall in
pre-SP2 XP, or the Windows Firewll in SP2 XP, or a hardware Nat/router
device allowing several machines to share a single broadband
connection--like a linksys, delink, or netgear (or many others) router.

You need to forward port 3389, TCP in the firewall or router device to the
host machine running XP Pro that you wish to reach via RD.

Here's one site that helps with that:

http://www.portforward.com/

Other than that little detail, you've got the right idea--you'll need to
know the public IP address of the machine you want to reach--usually the IP
acquired by the router when it connects to the ISP.
