Is it OK to just delete the Windows uninstall files the end up in c:\winnt,
such as $NtUninstallQ326830$? Actually these are folders with names like
this.

If is not OK, how can they be deleted?

With all the patches that one has to apply now, they build up on one's
system pretty fast and take up a lot of space. I'd like tot recover that
space. I have no plans to uninstall any of these patches. If I did, I'm sure
I'd pick one that would make Windows crash if I did.

The uninstall feature seems to be an idea that has lost its value and should
be done away with. Or, at least the user should be given the option to
retain the replaced files or not.

You can delete the directories
%windir%\$KBxxxxxx$, $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$

If you attempt Add/Remove on a program that can't be found, you should be
prompted that the entry can be removed. Else navigate to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
and delete the subkey for the program to remove it from Control
Panel|Add/Remove Programs
