I have 10 new machines to be used in a lab setting for students. All have
Vista. 1. GPO blocks contorol panel. how do you connect to printers?
2. Why will Office 2003 not load properly from the network? The machines
hang.
3. How do I stop all of the allow not allow garbage?
4. Why, when logged on ad the administrator (doamin with all rights) can I
not load Symantec 10.2? I get disk full errors, but when I log on as myself
(domain admin) does it allow me to load?
5. When I finally get to install a printer, it tell me that I have to load
the drive, to which i say ok, but then never installs the printer? I waited
20 minutes before having to shut the machine down hard!
6. Symantec Live update from a managed machine does not update automatically.

I'm ready to scrap Vista and reload XP. I worked on one preloaded machine
for 5.5 hours today and it never finished the load for the client.

Any answers?

Server 2003, Exhcnage 2003, WSUS, Norton anti-virus

If you have a GPO that blocks the entire access to Control Panel then you
could allow the Printers location on the Start Menu - that would still allow
you to attach a printer or you could put the script to do it in the machine
start up or user logon script. Adding a printer is just a function of
permissions so you would need to do it under the right security context.

No idea it rather depends on how you are doing this - is it automated are
you just running setup.exe form a copy of the DVD are you logged on as the
right level of account re you using GPO etc et etc .
3. How do I stop all of the allow not allow garbage?

Learn about UAC (User Access Control) and you will find the way to enable to
disable it. Under normal operating for a normal user UAC is not intrusive -
obviously during a setup of a machine or potentially during some lab work
using elevated privileges then you may see more often (unless you disable
it).
4. Why, when logged on ad the administrator (doamin with all rights) can

See the vendor of the product for their support of that product under Visa.
Also learn about running application and other processes with elevate
privileges (being logon on with a domain admin account in Vista is not the
same level of privilege as a Domain Admin account on an XP machine)
5. When I finally get to install a printer, it tell me that I have to

Are you using a Vista driver ? Is it from the manufacturers web site or
native to Vista. What rights are you trying to use to install the printer
(see previous about admin rights)
6. Symantec Live update from a managed machine does not update
automatically.

Possibly an issue with the vendors products or again a privileges issue.

The Vista install should not take 5.5 hours for a clean install. Your other
issues are more about your learning the new OS and the new security model.
For an experience XP admin many things have changed and there is a leaning
curve.
Also ensure all your products(apps and drivers) are Vista compatible.
