I'm trying to get my ADSL modem working with Windows XP
Pro. It simple wasn't connecting or recognizing the modem
(eg. plug and play didn't seem to be working) and when I
called Telus, the told me to go to command prompt and
type "ipconfig" to get my IP address. I typed that in and
all it displayed was "Windows IP Configuration" and
nothing else. No IP numbers, nothing. Telus said they
NEEDED the IP number to help me and they guessed it was a
problem with the software. Can someone please help?!

My problem isn't unique, I've found someone else posting
here with the exact same problem with XP Pro. I'm fairly
certain the problem is XP because I should have SOMETHING
set as my IP address, whether it's a series of numbers or
just 0.0.0.0. Instead I have nothing.

Thank you for you time,

David Sharpe

Hi David,
I had this problem before
so basically what you need to do is to reinstall your
TCP/IP Protocol (from your network properties)and restart
your computer.

After that, it depending if you have static or dynamic ip.
After you insert the all tcp/ip properties first ping
your local host )"ping localhost" or "ping 127.0.0.1")
just to be sure that you don't have any problem with your
network adapter and tcp/ip.
hope it will work for you
bye

I think that Telus got it backwards. Your computer doesn't have an IP
address because it doesn't recognize the ADSL modem. Or, to put it
another way, it can only have an IP address if it recognizes the ADSL
modem.

I'd call Telus back and talk with someone else.

Puzzled by your post, I ran ipconfig on my XP Pro machine. My firewall
immediately asked for permission to allow ipconfig to connect to the
Internet. Until I assented, the ipconfig display was blank.

Are you running a firewall?

Hi David,

2. Removed hkey settings under current user for winsock 1

On XO Pro - go to Start Menu , Control Panel , Network
Connections. Select Local Area Connection, click
properties. Select TCP - make sure it is set to obtain IP
automatically. Close. Then make sure that Local Area
Connection is enabled. This can be done by right clicking
the Connection "Local Area Connection" _ Make sure that
Bridging is disabled.
