Oh dear, where are my attachments going?

Yes, thats right, all my Outlook Express attachments are
now being saved in the wrong folder without me noticing -
ooh, silly me. Perhaps there is a patch for this
problem? ah yes, let me see.... it was the last patch
from microsoft that has CAUSED THIS PROBLEM. Thanks alot
MS, I'm sure all our staff will appreciate adjusting
the "default" save location EVERY TIME they receive one of
our vital purchase order or stock update attachments.
It's a shame that none of them noticed and as a result
there have been several embarassing situations - but we
can't really blame them can we - because it's all down to
our friends at MS. I must say to MS (if they're
listening) that I really don't like having to retrain over
twenty staff because of a 'fix' you've released that was
rated 'critical' due to the blaster worm fiasco. I
suppose that will teach me once and for all not to rely on
anything from MS, especially their own fixes for their own
bugs.

A reply from somebody who knows if there is a fix for this
annoying problem would be greatfully received.

Jim.

I'm assuming this is why I can no longer set Desktop as the default save location, like I used to have; it defaults to My Documents every time, and I seem unable to change it. Is this what you're talking about?

Is the Personal value name at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
set properly?

Yup, thats the one!
It used to work - because two or three applications I have
programmed relied on this feature as part of a procedure
for transferring orders & stock updates across our sites -
Doh!
Although still annoying, it's not so bad for individual
users as it is for a business whose day to day operations
rely on this stuff!

Anyway, if I find a patch or fix for it I'll let you know,
but it really is about time that MS pulled their finger
out and sorted it properly - it was them that broke it in
the first place after all!

Set "properly"? What do you mean? The Reg path you
described appears to hold the local user's "My Documents"
path (with correct syntax if that is what you mean
by "properly"), but it is not the path Outlook Express
uses for it's handy new default folder - as it seems to
default to the desktop.

I am not an Expert in Outlook Express (they participate in the OLEXP newsgroups).
But according to the InsideOE Web Site (authored by Tom Koch - Microsoft MVP for
Internet Explorer and Outlook Express) there is not yet a fix for this known bug with
the "Save Attachments" dialog box. For more information see:

InsideOE Known Bugs
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/bugs.htm

A workaround if you only have one ""default" save location" folder is to double-click
an email with an attachment. In the Header section right-click the attachment and
select Save As. Save the attachment (as usual) to "the "default" save location"
folder. Then, until OLEXP is closed, when you use the standard method of saving an
attachments the "Save Attachments" dialog box shows that ""default" save location"
path in the "Save To" box.

If you have more than one ""default" save location" folder saving attachments is
easier if you use the method described above for all attachments (since this opens
the Microsoft Windows 2000 common dialog box for use).

FYI. The list of folders on the Microsoft Windows 2000 common dialog Places bar can
be modified to help users reach frequently used folders with a single mouse click.
The following document explains how to modify the list of folders.

Also, if you have any more Outlook Express questions I suggest that you post in the
appropriate group. Your message header seems to indicate that you are posting from
the Microsoft Communities Web Page so below you will find a links to the Microsoft
Product Support Newsgroups Home Page. Once the page is loaded you will find the
