Using Outlook 2000 on a Win2k Machine, a user has Outlook
shutting down within about 5 minutes of starting. An
error message is displayed stating "Outlook has generated
errors and will be closed by Windows.....". The message
says an error log is being generated.

Currently the e-mail is stored in two .pst files, both
around 800mb in size. The .pst files have been compacted
and checked for repairs (using the scanpst.exe utility).
I also ran the full repair utility for Microsoft Office,
and it says it's successful, but still the error appears
and Outlook closes down after about 5 minutes.

Any reasons why this happens? I don't want to have to un-
install and re-install office if I don't have to.

Thanks!

You say they were "compacted". How big were they before
compacting?
I heard there's a limit of 1GB for PST's that has always
existed, even with Outlook 2003. I wonder if the original
size still registers after compaction?

There was one original .pst file that was 1.8GB.
According to the Microsoft Knowledgebase, the limit before
Outlook starts having tis 2.0GB.

While Outlook is running (before it crashes), we could
move files from the one big 1.8GB .pst folder to a
second .pst folder.

Once about half of the saved e-mails were moved from the
original 1.8GB file, without Outlook running, I then used
the compact utility in Outlook (found in Outlook
properties....). It took about 4 hours to compact the 1.8
down to it's new size of .8GB.

I then ran the scanpst.exe utility to make sure the both
new files were not corrupted, which they were not.

Still, Outlook crashes in about 5 minutes of starting.
Before it crashes, it seems to work fine. However, even
if Outlook just is started and not touched, it will still
crash within about 5 minutes. I just hate to uninstall it
then re-install it if at all possible.
