I have gone to the Office update site several times in the last several days
to update my Office XP Pro, but when MS scans my computer it only gets to
30%; I finally get sick of it and stop the process. I did upgrade my
already upgraded sp2 Win XP yesterday with 2 new security downloads. I have
a dial-up modem; is this my problem? If there are so many new security
updates for Office, MS should figure something out; so, the little guy with
a slow bandwidth can get the security updates he or she needs. It really is
a terrible thing for MS to have to keep doing all this patching because of
cyber terrorists and vandals. Thank you!

Sincerely -- Randy

I update both Office and Windows using a dial-up so it can be done.
(Although if I can use high speed access I'll opt for it instead. <g>)

Do you know which updates it is trying to install? Depending on which
updates you need they may be available on CD. I do know there is a new
Windows update so it could be a matter of traffic causing the delay.

The latest Office XP update is:
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=885876

You might try manually downloading the patch(s) and see if that works.

I had no problem updating Windows XP with SP2 because I sent for the CD.
Yesterday I finished another security update of Window XP with 2 security
patches (took abt. 25 min at the most); I did it for my father's computer
also. The problem is the speed or lack of speed of updating Office; the
detection stalls out at 30%. I even stalls out if I want to find out what
updates I do have installed. When I have it check for updates I have
installed, it also stalls out at the 30% complete mark. The MS XP Office
server must be overloaded! I heard there was a bunch of new security
patches for MS Office, and I need them with all the trash I've been getting
in the last several months. Tell them at MS central to get something done
about their crowded pipeline dealing with Office updates. Thanks for
acknowledging my post -- - -

Sincerely --- Randy

FWIW, I had similar problems updating Office 2003. Instead of using Office
Update, use the links provided to go to the KB article describing each
update. In the article will be a link to a direct download. You can download
the patches manually and apply them manually, which is actually more
satisfactory because (a) if the download is interrupted, it will resume
automatically where it left off and (b) you can disconnect from the Internet
before disabling your AV to install the patches.

I rather download the updates manually too. But I've been trying to
use Office Online lately in order to be familiar with the various
problems others could encounter.

So Randy, if you know which updates you need then downloading and
manually installing could be the way to go on dial-up. That method
always works the best for me when I don't have access to high speed
Internet.

This also makes it easier to save the updaters so that if you have to remove
and reinstall, they don't need to be downloaded again.

Provided you can remember where you saved them! I started to add that
benefit to my original message but was deterred by the fact that it is all
too easy to forget where these things are stored.

In a folder called Installers and Updaters, at a fairly high level of my
hard drive? I just dump all downloads, plus copies of installation CDs,
into that folder, and clear it out onto a CD backup on a regular basis.
Actually, for Office, I created a new installation CD that copied the
original CD and added the installers, plus a plaintext file with the CD key,
to take with me while traveling.

Well, you're much more organized than I am. Perhaps with my next computer
I'll be more knowledgeable.

You should read unattended.msfn.org! It is about creating an unattended
Windows XP CD, but there is a section about Office XP/2003 too.
I'm in the process of creating a DVD with Windows XP (SP2
slipstreamed), Office 2003 (with all updates), AV, drivers, and all
other software.
On a new pc, I only have to enter the computer name, everything else is
automatic! No more next-next-next-finish installations ;-)

You might want to ask in microsoft.public.officeupdate

Different percentage hangs indicate problems in different parts of the
scan process. The only report I saw of solving a "hung at 30%" problem
involved uninstalling Office using a special Microsoft clean-up
utility, deleting some patcher registry keys, and installing
everything again. This is a real mess. The problem apparently was
caused by the patch installer program losing track of what it had
installed.

There may be a better method by now...

Good luck...
