I need to transfer Office XP from my Windows 2000 machine to a new machine
running Vista. I only have an Upgrade disc as I migrated from Office 2000

I am not sure how the question in your message body pertains to backing
up (in your subject line). With earlier Office products, IIRC you need
to first install the older version and then the upgrade. You can find
out for sure by posting in an Office newsgroup. Here is a list of all
the MS newsgroups so you can find the right one:

However, you should know that Office versions earlier than 2003 are not
compatible with Vista. For instance, Outlook 2002 (Office XP) will not
remember passwords. This will not be fixed. Check in the Office
newsgroups for other incompatibilities. You'd be better off buying a
newer version of Office - either Office 2003 or the current Office 2007.

As far as the data, back up the files by copying them to 1) CD/DVD-R; 2)
external hard drive; 3) USB flash drive - whichever method suits you
best. Then copy the files from the backup media to your new computer and
put them in your user account's Documents folder. The newer version of
Office will have no difficulty opening the files made in the older version.

You'll need the original Office 2000 disk as well as the Office XP upgrade
disk.
