Ben

Hi there, I'm currently studying a certificate 2 in IT and have been
working over a number of the microsoft office suite programs such as
excel, access and word covering many of the basic functions and working
a little ways into advanced practices.
With the new Windows Vista arriving soon, I've been wondering how its
office suite compares to the XP editions and if anyone has had some
experiences with the beta regarding this.
Also, I've been interested in some alternatives to the office suite and
if there are many that are readily available.
Thankyou.

Ben;
Windows Vista does not have an office suite and neither does Windows XP.
The new office suite is Microsoft Office 2007.

You can install and use a trial of Office 2007:

Vista went RTM a while back and a trial of it will probably be available in
January.

Microsoft Office is a separate application from Windows XP and, therefore,
you will need to purchase a copy of Office 2007.

Alternatively, there is a perfectly good free office suite called
OpenOffice. It is certainly worth looking at, and it won't cost you a penny
(cent!)

What sort of "certificate" doesn't tell students that Office is separate
from Windows?

Windows Vista doesn't have an Office Suite. No version of Windows has ever
had an Office Suite.

Office is a completely separate product that has nothing to do with Windows.
You can run Microsoft Office under Windows, you can run some other Office
suite, you can run various combinations, or you can run no Office suite
products. It's entirely up to you.

If you do choose to run Microsoft Office, you normally have a choice of
several versions. Windows XP can run Office 2007, Office 2003, Office XP,
Office 97, or Office 95.

Windows Vista can run Office 2007 and Office 2003; I'm not sure about older
versions of Office.

If you're asking how Office 2007 compares to previous versions, in general
each newer version has improvements and more features than its predecessor.
Whether those improvements and extra features are important to *you* depends
entirely on how you use those products; to some people they may be
wonderful; others may not care.

Also, I've been interested in some alternatives to the office suite
and if there are many that are readily available.

There are several alternatives: the freeware OpenOffice, the inexpensive
StarOffice, Corel WordPerfect Office, etc. Again, which is best to you
depends on how you work. Personally, I mix and match rather than stick with
everything from a single suite; I prefer WordPerfect X3 to Microsoft Word,
but prefer Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint (currently running the versions
from Office 2007) to the WordPerfect equivalents.

Better yet what kind of student considering IT as a profession
doesn't already know that.
