1) Do _not_ open a file that is on a floppy from within Word. You are asking
Word to trash your document.
2) Try opening the document after Word already (completely) open. I know
that (possibly because I have a number of Add-Ins that have to load) when I
double-click on a document in Windows and Word is not already open I will
often get a message like the one you are experiencing. If Word is open, the
document opens. Also, if I start Word and open the document from within
Word, it opens.

I did that - with several files. Also tried double clicking on the file
name in Windows Explorer. It opened Word but again, said that the file
wasn't available.
