Running windows 98se & not a lot of memory left. Deleated my old
office-2000 program as it was over blated with stuff I never use. Is
there a small program ( free ) that I can use to just write letters.
Dont need anything very fancy TIA..Gimpy

CryptEdit, despite name, is lightweight and looks good too.

Scroll down page for CryptEdit (freeware)

AbiWord is a great freeware word processor. It will open and write to
MS Word formats. I think Atlantis requires a registration fee after
awhile.

The link is down at the moment, but Google indexed it on Jan. 2nd,
2005, so it should come back up.

Its usually available here:

http://www.abisource.com

The SourceForge Project Page is here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/abiword/

It can be downloaded there too.

Apparently there is a cool Wikipedia plugin where you can access
Encyclopedia articles straight from the word processor.

Thanks for all the sites everyone, will no dought find what I want in
one of these Gimpy

On my Windows 98 machine, I use WordTabs. Great spell check, even does
envelopes.

I found the following active links for version 3.25.

Absolutely not !
There are two versions of Atlantis
- Atlantis Ocean Mind (payware) (which has great features)
- Atlantis Nova (freeware)
"Atlantis Nova is the basic freeware version of the Atlantis Word
Processor."

AbiWord is still has bugs, unfortunately. I had a look at it again
last week and, e.g., it still did not handle .doc files with pictures
correctly. And it's not what the O.P. asked for.

Bullsh**, if you mean Atlantis Nova, which is completely free.

Oops, sorry. Thanks for the correction. Did not know there was a
freeware version of Atlantis. Good to know.

I took a look at Atlantis Nova. Looks like a good one. I agree this
seems to fill the bill for the OP.
Sorry, did not know about this version. Thanks for the corrections.

Wordpad that comes with win 98se is probably already installed on your
machine, look here:

ProgramFiles/Accessories/wordpad.exe

Otherwise insert the win98se-CD and go to:

Control Panel=>Add/Remove Programs=>Windows Setup=>Accessories>Details
Check Wordpad to install it.

It's good enough for writing and printing letters, save the letters in RTF-
format and everyone will be able to view them.

Hmmm, I downloaded Wordtabs. I can't find any reference to envelope
printing. Do you use it? How do you call it up? Nothing in the help
file, nothing in the drop-down menus.

Thanks.

When I googled Wordtabs, one result said, "I have, however, prepared
simplified version called WordTabs, containing only support for Word (97
and 2000) and without user interface visual niceties. " The URL is
http://17slon.com/gp/wintabs/. I haven't tried it yet, so I can't comment
on it.

Steve . . .

I also googled WordTabs, and couldn't find much of anything other than
the version that I downloaded. Too bad.

Thanks.
