I have not yet purchased Microsoft Office for this new computer but I need to
access some of my word and excel files that I have just downloaded off of my
old computer. Is there a program on Vista that can open xls and doc files?

You can download and install for FREE OpenOffice.org - it will read you
xls and doc files.
