After defraging my c: drive, some of my files were corrupted. They could not
be opened by the applications. The antivirus program(McAfee) was turned off
for some reason. I was able to restart it with great difficulty, but the
files were unusable. Luckily I had a recent backup and was able to restore my
files. What could have happened? I tried to get help from McAfee support but
they were close to useless. I had also run Spybot before I did the defrag so
it was one of those 2 things that caused the problem. Spybot could not remove
some of the items and had to do it when I restarted the computer.

Soooo, after THAT restart, you restarted again, right?
If not, it may explain what happened.
It's probably worth going to the Command Prompt and
running chkdsk /r on that drive now. chkdsk by itself
without flags will run the tests but not repair
anything, just report problems it finds.
From the command Prompt, type chkdsk /? to get
descriptions of what the flags mean and do. Basically,
/f fixes errors and /r does the same but continues to
also test unused areas of the disk for bad sectors.

It started ok and I used the utility in the utility menu to check the disk.
Is this the same thing as chkdsk? I could not execute chkdsk from the cmd
prompt. You think it's a disk problem? Thanks for your help.
