I am attempting to deploy Office XP on WIndows XP machines on a 2000 domain.
I have created an administrative share and given read access to "domain
computers" I have then created a OU, with a test machine account in it, and
made a computer group policy to deploy the software package on the share.
The policy has read and apply group policy access to "domain computers".

The problem I am having is that it continues to say "source not available"
in the event viewer, however when logged in, I can browse to the location.
The policy does reference the UNC path, not the mapped drive. NTFS
permissions on the office admin share are also domain computers having
read/list access. Any ideas?

Hello Jon,

Here are a few ideas.

Can you log on as a user (perhaps putting them in the same OU as the
computers) and install Office XP from this path?

If you give full control access (as a test) does it work?

Besides the Share level "read access" what is the NTFS file or folder level
access?

When you are logged in you are using your credentials this is probably why
you can hit the share.

You may want to try and post this to the Office setup or MSI Newsgroup.

You may get more information about the error out of a Userenv or MSI log:

Here is something:

USERENV(1c8.4ac) 09:59:47:339 ProcessGPOList: Extension Software
Installation returned 0x64c.
USERENV(1c8.4ac) 09:59:47:377 ProcessGPOList: Extension Software
Installation was able to log data. RsopStatus = 0x0, dwRet = 1612, Clearing
the dirty bit
USERENV(1c8.4ac) 09:59:47:396 ProcessGPOs: Extension Software Installation
ProcessGroupPolicy failed, status 0x64c.

Convert 0x64c to DEC= 1612

Net helpmsg 1612 = The installation source for this product is not
available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.

so......

It SEEMS that we are trying to hit: <TLH09501>. Although this may actually
just be the local box that the policy is running on, I am unable to tell
because of the parsed userenv.log.

Basically 1 of 3 things thjat I can think of,

1- We are trying to hit a server that is not available for the source.

2. The computer account(?) doesn't have access to the source.

3. The policy is processing before the network is fully functional on this
machine.

As a test what happened if you give Everyone full control on the share and
NTFS permissions? Also are the permissions propogated all the way down the
share? Also are you specifying Fully Qualified or Netbios name in the UNC
path?

For item 3 try to disable XPs Fast Logon Optimization:

Ill check on the optimization, but I think I already tried that. tlh09501 is
the machine i am delivering the policy to. I have tried giving everyone
full access all over the place (folder, policy, etc), and still get the same
error. Ive also tried the netbios, and FQ path, same error.Permisions are
fully propagated. Im glad Im not the only one stumped, though it may be
something propietary to my network.
