my new gateway has microsoft windows professional xp and
I want to change the office assistant; however I keep
getting a request toinsert windows office 2000 disc, and
cannot get action with the windows pro xp disc help

There is no such thing as "windows office 2000 disc".
The Windows XP CD will not work, you need to use the Office CD.

You seem to be confusing two totly seperate thing Windows
and office are differnt programs: indows is your
operating systom or "OS" Witch letes you run applcations
such as note pad or pinball; Office runs on windows and
is made up of thefollowing componitns Word, Excel, power
Point, Axcess, Frontpage, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher and
busness and contact manager
