office assistant stops working

any time i use ppt or word in Office 2002 xp, the Office Assistant appears for a moment & then disappears...a message then appears telling me the assistant has " stopped workng" & to click the option in Help to reactivate it which i do, but again -it disappears! it no longer has the sound either [ i use the cat assistant ]..i tried "detect & repair" without any success...any suggestions? i am running xp home ed.... thanks...
 
No but if you can find out how to get rid of it millions of people will be grateful to you!!!
