One of the most convenient and useful tools found in previous incarnations
of Office has been dropped?

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!

I discovered this today, after installing the Office 2007 60-day trial. For
the first time in about 4 years, I had to manually configure all my Office
apps, including Outlook and all my email accounts. Sigh.

Where have you been? Transferring those settings have been in the purview of
the operating system, not Office for years.

LOL.
Only in the heads of the people working at Microsoft ;)

Indeed! Where I have been is in configuration-free bliss, thanks to the
Office 2003 "Save My Settings Wizard".

So, Patrick, assuming one has their "Office 2003 Settings File.OPS" and a
fresh new install of Office 2007, how does one transfer the settings? If I
have been lost all this time, please do guide me, my MSFT sherpa.

Sardonically yours,

Actually, I don't know.
It is the purview of the OS now, so there are two Vista tools: Vista
Easy Transfer:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/features/forhome/easytransfer.mspx
And the Vista Upgrade my Settings wizard.
If you can use them with an existing settings files, I don't know. If
you can use them with just on XP, I don't know...
How you use them with just Office and not the rest of the Windows
settings, I don't know...

I did attempt to use the Vista Easy Transfer application, but it seems to
absolutely insist on the transfer being from one machine to another. So, I
wasn't even able to learn whether or not it can work with a Office 2003
settings file (Office 2003 Settings File.OPS).

This "Vista Upgrade my Settings wizard" you mentioned, is this something
that's used when doing an upgrade install of Vista? If so, that's not going
to help plebes like me who have done a clean install, and just need to
migrate their Office from 2003 to 2007, using the Office 2003 settings file.
If, as you say, this is the purview of the OS, the OS has utterly failed in
its purview... at least as far as moving from Office 2003 to 2007 is
concerned.

I do appreciate your suggestions, though.

Thanks.

Thanks Patrick, but it doesn't appear that one can use either tool to simply
import saved settings from Office 2003 into Office 2007.

It's Windows purview now...what did you expect? Who wants to move
settings between Office versions without getting a new version of
Windows at the same time?

here in our office we like to save settings between diffrent outlooks as we upgrade we deal in hippa guidelines upgrading then redoing these settings in total unneeded redundancy.

I am missing "Save my settings Wizard" too, in truth I decided to install the
Save my settings wizard using the Office 2003 CD after Office 2007
installation and the good news is that it works, every configuration from
office 2003 was transfered to 2007 version using my old, very good and always
faithfull .OPS file.

Hello Patrick, why microsoft abandoned us?? why to make a new version
missing one of the best functionality.
I cant understand, maybe there is a good reason, but not for us ( consumers).
