I thought this deserved its own topic though I mentioned it in a subtopic
elsewhere.

Office 2007

This has happenned twice now on the same machine.

I start the install.

It goes _maybe_ 3 minutes.

My computer then powers off (click).

It's impossible to install this software on this machine with Vista build
5744 on x64 version. Not sure if it's hardware specific or OS version
specific or something else I don't know about.

Rob,
ya might have luck in this room,
but I've been going here for office 2007 install stuff;
microsoft.public.office.setup

Jeff

Rob,
I forgot,
One other thing;
Ya gotta remove Office 2007 beta 2 totally; if you are running it now; or
Office 2007 RTM won't install.

Jeff

Yes, this is the release version... I never ran the beta of Office.

Third time's the "charm??" --- It didn't crash the system this time.... BUT
Instead I received the following screen:

http://robwilkens.com/ObscureError.jpg

"Microsoft Office Professional 20007 encountered an error during setup."

Without indication of what the error is/was.

Powers off ?

What kind of power supply do you have on your computer? Vista does require
some extra wattage since it pushes processors and video cards in everyday
use than in XP. But I doubt it's that significant. Weird. It might actually
be blue screening but Vista might just turn the computer off instead of show
a blue screen. As if that somehow wasn't insanely uglier than a blue screen.

.... and in spite of that error screen shown, Office 2007 is installed and
apparently working now... Odd as all heck.

The only catch is it didn't uninstall Office 2003. That's probably where
the failure was.

uhhuh
If office is beta or rtm; or if your runnin vista or xp; or even 95 or 98
your all good.
It's just the office newsgroup;like this;only for office though

Jeff

I just bought the power supply at Best buy (lord knows I forgot the brand)
For $150+, it's a 650-watt power supply.

One thought I had was that it might be overheating (the machine had been on
well over 15 hours and I did build the system myself). The thing is: Debian
Linux is also on this system, and when I installed the default kernel, my
system randomly powered off too -- but after I downloaded the
latest-and-greatest kernel source code and rebuilt a kernel myself, the
linux "power off" problem went away. So my guess: Whatever the linux folks
fixed in Linux to stop the power off, Microsoft hasn't yet fixed in Windows
Vista. (Note: Vista is not randomly powering off, it was only doing it when
I was installing Office).

Prior to my third install, I did decide to go into the BIOS settings and
turn on "Cool'n'Quiet Technology' and the third time it seemed to come
closer to working (it didn't power off).
