What is the procedure to transfer the Office 2003 license from my old

To be in proper complience, you need to uninstall it from the old computer.
Then install on the new computer and follow the normal procedure for
activation when presented, usually the first time you open an application.
If it's been awhile since it was activated on the old computer the new
activation may just go through.

If installation on the old computer was relatively recent, you may be
prompted to call and provided a phone number. Just tell the operator this
is a new computer, you've removed the software from the old computer and the
operator will activate over the phone.

If Office 2003 was purchased with the old computer, it is likely an OEM
license which cannot be transferred. It is 'part of' the old computer

The license is tied to the hardware, but there is nothing preventing you
from installing it on another machine.

You're right, Tom and I certainly should have mentioned that if it was an
OEM version that came with his previous computer, it cannot be transferred.

Andre

You are incorrect here. OEM Office is tied to the computer and will die with that computer. I cannot be transferred over.
If the OP had a Retail version of Office on his OEM machine then it would be a different story

Nothing prevented me from installing OEM versions of Office 97 SMB, Office
2000 SMB, Office XP SMB on another computer other than the one it came with.
But in the case of Office 2003 OEM, you are correct:

Well, in KB article 826526, it also states at the bottom:

"CAUSE: This behavior may occur if you installed an Original Equipment
Manufacturer's (OEM) copy of Office, and you already installed and activated
the same OEM copy on another computer. OEM copies of Office 2003 can only be
activated on a single computer.

Note: You can remove and then reinstall Office by using the same product key
on one computer successfully."

This would lead ME to believe that an OEM version of Office 2003 or 2007 CAN
be installed on a different machine, so long as it has been removed from the
PC on which it originally was installed. However, I might be misinterpreting
what those paragraphs really means. Some of MSFT's KB articles can be
cryptic. :>

Technically, no. Those earlier versions of Office relied entirely upon
the integrity of the user, trusting him/her to abide by the EULA. When that
proved to be naive:

Well I'm using my Office 2000 (at least the Word and Excel portions) on my
new Vista Ultimate - they haven't caused any problems so far.

Thanks so much for taking the time to submit your replies. The salesman at
the store led me to believe it was necesary to purchase upgrades in order to
use my Office 2003 Pro with Vista. You saved me hundreds.

Im having problems with Microsoft Office 2003 on Windows Vista Home Premium.
My computer keeps crashing (system stops responding suddenly while Im using
Word, for example). Is there a patch or update to solve this problem of
incompatibility? I know someone who had the same problem and got a patch for
it...

You computer might well need a patch but it is much more likely to be for a
device driver than for Office. Make sure you have updated drivers for the
equipment on your computer.
