I have a new computer with Home Office XP installed. Can
I purchase the Office 2003 Upgrade instead of the full
program?

Apparently, you have "Windows XP Home Edition" installed,
which is an "Operating System". If you do not own a previous
version of a qualifying Microsoft Product (Windows XP Home
Edition is not a qualifying product for an Office upgrade), then you'll
need to purchase the "Full Version" of Microsoft Office 2003.

What's in the Office Editions?

I just got a new computer with Windows XP Professional installed. I had Office Professional 97 on my old computer and still have the installation disk. Is it possible to install Office 2003 upgrade version without installing Office 97 on the computer first? (when I tried to install Office 97 onto the new computer, Windows crashed.)

Office 97 and up runs just fine on XP. Don't know what happened to
crash your XP when you installed, but my guess would be some sort of
adware/spyware on your PC.
Anyway, try the experts in the Office newsgroups for more info.

Yes.

When asked for a qualifying product, insert your Office 97 CD in the drive
and browse to it.

If your new computer included Works, then you have a qualifying product for
Office 2003. For more information of upgrade eligibility go to:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/standard.mspx

The above information is for the Standard edition. However, the upgrade
eligibility applies to any retail Office 2003 upgrade edition.

Thanks! I really didn't want to try to install Office 97 again after what
happened the first time (I ended up reformating the hard drive). Has anyone
on this group upgraded this way, using the Office 97 disk? It sounds like
it should be fairly easy.
Thanks again. JeanP
Yes, it is easy.
While I have not done a upgrade this way from Office 97, I have between
other versions.
