Office 2003 Pro - Constant Windows Installer interruptions

Using Office 2003 Pro and constantly getting "Windows
Installer: Preparing to install..." dialogs. Very strange
(and very unwelcome).

Selected "Run all from my computer" during setup so not
sure what's causing this behavior - same behavior is also
causing full system hangs/lockups occasionally. (Perhaps
the fact that getting "Error! Unable to check for updates
on this computer" from Microsoft Office Update online?)
Did download "Office 2003 Critical Update: KB828041" from
Catalog.

Also, clicked on an attached JPG image sent from a
business client and chose "Open". First hit with
the "Windows Installer: Preparing to install..." dialog
and then a "Microsoft Office Outlook" dialog that
states, "The patch package could not be opened. Verify
that the patch package exists and that you can access it,
or contact the application vendor to verify that this is
a valid Windows Installer patch package."

Curious. And clearly not desirous.

Solved the problem myself. Everything running smoothly
again.

Re-ran Office 2003 Setup and installed Critical Update
downloaded from Catalogue (as Office Update
website "Unable to check for updates on this computer")

Strange route to happiness though. Originally uninstalled
Office 2003 Pro and did System Restore to pre-Office 2003
installation date (a couple days back). Got hit with
Office XP Pro errors which was previously installed (and
upgraded over) when attempting to launch. Then failed to
be able to uninstall nor reinstall Office XP as dialogs
kept popping that Setup was an invalid patch file. (No
kidding...). Decided to reinstall Office 2003 Pro and run
Criticl update locally. Works great.
