Can anyone recommend a good free newsreader I could use for these groups. I
don't use OE for mail just groups and would rather use a newsreader.

And what do you think OE is if not a newsreader, pray? I don't understand
the question. You have a newsreader, you're using it now.

I guess you are right. It's just I thought maybe it would be easier than
negotiating the "Outlook Express is not your current mail client do you wish
to switch" pop-up each time! I'll cope with it. Thanks.

Tips for avoiding prompts from OE about default email client:
- Under Tools> Accounts> Mail: remove all accounts.
- If using Outlook for email, start OE by using the Outlook menu for "Read>
News" (or similar wording) - or - edit the target line of an OE shortcuts
and add the switch "/outnews" (without quotes) at the end of the command
line.

Let me guess, you're running Office 2003, right? I will assist you just this
once.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/newsonly switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.

Does that help?

Outlook uses Outlook Express in a "news only" mode when you use the Go, News
menu. If you don't like using the Go, New menu, you can create your own
desktop or Quick Launch shortcuts using either of the following switches to
load only the news module:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsonly
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews

Right click on your desktop and choose New Shortcut. Browse for msimn.exe
and add the switch at the end or copy one of the command lines above and
paste it into the dialog.

Either switch loads Outlook Express with news capability only, while
/outnews also changes the titlebar to Outlook Newsreader.

You can add the shortcut to your Outlook Bar or Shortcut pane by dragging it
from the desktop to Outlook.

I like Free Agent. Let's you LOCK messages you want to keep. Plain
text only, which is fine for news. I use it also for mail messages
that I want to keep. Lets you save the messages as txt, and you can
append later messages to the same text file.

Just my opinion.
