off topic: usb cable

Hope this is not a stupid question. Can you tell the difference between a
USB 1 cable and a USB 2 cable and if so how? I have a few USB cables and
don't know which is a 1 or 2 and if there is even a difference.

There isn't one.
 
Technically, a USB2 has to meet slightly different specs. But any reasonably
well-made 1.1 cable will do. If you have connectivity issues, try a better
cable.
