The Browser Has Landed

The Off By One Web Browser may be the world's smallest and fastest
web browser with full HTML 3.2 support. It is a completely self-
contained, stand-alone 1.2 MB application with no dependencies on any
other browser or browser component. For Windows 95, Windows 98,
Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

NEW:  Now, with a tabbed browsing interface.

Download the Off By One Browser Setup kit or ZIP file package, posted

I gave it a whirl. Looks like it'd be good for an ancient machine that
my dad has. Just a couple of things which would be nice to see, though:
* The middle mouse button doesn't cause scrolling.
* A link box on the menu bar, rather than having to click on an icon to
bring up a dialog box.

That's big! Tabbed browsing comes to OB1.
Wonder if it can be set as the default browser yet?

That alone keeps me from using it.

It also has a "Win 3.11" look about it. I don't want to bash it though,
because I'm only talking about aesthetics, and hey, they've produced
more web browsers than I ever have. Actually, I recommended to my dad to
use Internet Explorer rather than Firefox, because the latter is just
too much of a memory hog for him.

Actually, whilst we're on the subject of web browsers, I took a look
through my web stats to see what the popular browsers are. An
interesting statistic is that, just last month, Internet Explorer ceased
to generate the majority of requests. Mozilla/5 accounted for 25%,
compare with a year ago, when it stood at 7%.

Have you looked at K-Meleon recently? There's a recently-released
version (0.9) which - judging from the forums - runs pretty well on
older machines.

(I'm a fan of K-Meleon, which I made my default browser a couple of
months ago. now my default browser. It seems to run just fine out of
the box, but it also lets me express my inner geek by fiddling with
macros and stuff.....)

Nice to see what I thought was a "dead project" updated.

It's not a serious modern browser though - since many sites don't want
to know anything that isn't a current version of IE.

On the other hand it's the ideal browser to take to a website you
don't trust. or one that abuses script and active conten, but is not
dependent on it.

I wonder how its rendering compares with an original Mosaic!

PS. You can also fit Offbyone AND the DLLs (SSL support) on a floppy,
if you UPX it, in fact, UPXing it is a good idea if you intend running
it directly from any limited speed media

I keep hearing about these sites, but I never come across 'em ...

Just hit Ctrl-W to bring up the URL box.

I recommend Off By One for anyone who has a system struggling
for resources. I use it a lot on my old 400MHz, 128MB box as it
doesn't like having my Thunderbird & Firefox open at the same
time (although Firefox is still certainly my main browser).
Very good if you want to quickly go to a site while you've got
something big crunching in the background.

For instanceBabya Discoverer has had tabbed browsing since v 8-and rss
viewing too (perhaps OB1 should have an lightweight rss viewer-perhaps
seamless). Firefox is my favorite browser too.

The latest version of Opera (7.54) is running fine on my mother's
Pentium 100 :-)

You've never heard of UPX ?
http://upx.sourceforge.net/

It packs EXE and DLL files, almost as much as if they were still
zipped, however, UPX has a chequered reputation as a tool used by the
"black hats" to hide malicious code by compressing it - treat already
compressed EXE's with due caution, unless the author and any
intermediaries are trustworthy.

Packing programs on todays size and speed of hard drives is
counterproductive, since it prevent the program code being paged from
its own file, and some programs will not tolerate any interference.
