OE6 Finally defeated me

System WinXP sp2

Problem: Finally changed over from Win2K to new laptop with XP about 8
months ago,and was pleasantly surprised with the new system. I have had
a few hiccups but archived info and Google searches have kept me going.
However about a week ago I found OE6 would no longer send any mail
although everthing else worked fine. No amount of research has come up
with an answer so I finally installed Mozilla.
However I would just like to know if this OE6 problem has affected
anyone else, and if so did they find a solution?
Why MS removed OE & IE from the add/remove panel so that you can't even
do a repair is beyond my understanding.

Most likely a corrupted Outbox or Sent Items folder. This can be
caused by stopping automatic compacting, using Outlook Express
whilst compacting is in progress or compacting whilst Online.

Using Windows XP you need to enable show hidden files. Start,
Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings.

Place the cursor on Local Folder and select File, Folder, New.
Move or copy all messages from your Sent Items folder to the
new folder for safety and close Outlook Express. Enter Windows
Explorer and select Tools, Find, Files and Folders search for the
"Outbo*.dbx" without the quotes. Delete the file. Repeat the
process searching for "Sent Item*.dbx". New folders will be
automatically generated when you restart Outlook Express.
Finally place the cursor on Outlook Express in the Folder List
and run File, Folder, Compact All whilst Offline.

Hope this helps.

Problem Unable to send mail with OE6

Hi Gerry
Basically I had already done what you suggested, but thanks for the input.
Earlier this evening I decided I had nothing to lose so I ran Outlook
Express Quick Backup and then deleted every folder in OE. Amazingly this
worked.

Hi Galen
Actually I'd already been to the 318378 site but I only have a recovery
disk, not the retail version so it didn't really help but thank you for
taking the time to try and help.

With your recovery disk:

http://www.pchomecall.org.uk/support/sfc.htm

That's pretty close. You might have to fool around to figure it out.
Alternatively you can, when running System File Check (SFC) *probably* get
away with clicking skip when the app asks for the CD. It *should* pull it
from cache files and updates assuming you've updated your PC.

Hi Galen
Thanks for the extra information.
http://www.pchomecall.org.uk/support/sfc.htm
seems to be an excellent help site.
As it happens I did try running sfc before asking for help from this
newsgroup and although it appeared to work correctly it never asked for the
XP disk and didn't clear my problem with OE6 so I put it down to not having
a retail disk installation, but after reading the pchomecall support page
I've realised that my recovery disk automatically puts a full copy of the
folder 1386 on my hard disk so perhaps the src app looked there and then was
able to complete.

I do keep my system fully updated and make regular image copies using
Acronis together with backing up my own data to an external USB disk and/or
DVD.

I can now get back to my original hard disk problem which is how I found
out that my OE6 wouldn't send emails but I shall start another thread for
that to avoid confusion.

My thanks again for your help

Pepper
