OE won't spell check replies

My OE spell check won't check replies. I have the latest version in xpsp2
(6.00.2900.2180).

I have the box checked that says ignore original text in replies, but it
should be checking my new typing in a reply, and it doesn't. I have tried
putting the cursor at various locations in the message, and that doesn't
seem to have any effect.

Any ideas on how to correct this. Thanks...Pete

You need to purchase and install a version of Microsoft Works, Word,
or Office in order to enable spell-check in Windows XP.

Hi,

Start/search/files for csapi3t1.dll, copy it to these folders:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF
C:\Program Files\Outlook Express

Carey...Huh! I have all three on my pc. Plus the OE spell check works
fine for original posts. I told you it just won't work on the replies to
other posts. Did you read what Rick Rogers wrote...Pete

All I can tell you is that I have much the same problem and it's been like
this for many years.

For me it's not quite that clear cut. Sometimes it finds my spelling errors
on replies but often it doesn't.

One thing is true. If I first highlight the new text, the speller always
checks it. Only when nothing is highlighted does it frequently fail to
check my new text.

As a result I routinely highlight all the text before I invoke the speller.

Bruce.

Thanks Bruce...Another person told me this also, and Ricks solution didn't
help either. It used to work, at least on and off, but now it won't check
any replies (and I have a new pc). Oh well, I will highlight :-)

Thanks Rick...it was already in \PROOF. I added it to \OE and it didn't
help. I guess the only solution is to highlight the new text like Bruce
said, unless you have any other ideas. I guess Bill screwed up on this
one...Pete

The option works on all of my systems and I have several running SP2. I
guess Bill didn't screw up.

Well...I guess he partially screwed up, because several other people besides
me (in other ng's) and Bruce in this group, said they have the same problem
:-) ...Pete

In a reply OE will not check what you insert between lines of the original.

Frank...currently it won't check anything on replies- at the beginning, in
the middle, or at the end. But like I say it used to. Something
happened...Pete

Same thing for OE6

Pete,
Have you check the following registry and see if the back slash (\)
is missing in the key mentioned in the following MS Article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;224176

RRR...what are you talking about. The site you gave me is for OE 5. I told
you I have the latest version of 6.0...Pete

RRR...I don't think it applies to my xpsp2 which has OE 6.0.2900.2180.
There is no "SharedFilesDir" in the "SharedTools" folder in regedt32. I
have pasted the instructions from the web site you gave me below. What
version of XP are you using...Pete

1.Click Start, click Run, type Regedt32, and then click OK.2.Double-click
to expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder, expand the Software folder, and
then expand the Microsoft folder.3.Double-click to expand the Shared Tools
folder, and then click the SharedFilesDir value.4.On the Edit menu, click
Modify.5.Type C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ in the Value
Data box, and then click OK.6.Quit Registry Editor.

Pete,
I have the same version of XP SP2 as you, with all the updates as of today. You will need to have a MS Office application or "Suite", such as "MS Works" or "MS Word" installed. There are several other MS Office applications, that will give you the spell-check function in OE.

If nothing already mentioned, and posted below does not work, you may have a damaged "Identity" in OE. Have you tried creating a new Identity, and see if Spell-check works the way you want it to? If it works in the new Identity, you can import your old identity's message folders into the new one. It would be best that you recreate the mail/news accts and message rules in the new Identity.

There is no folder named "SharedFilesDir", it is a registry key string value name.

I have the CSAPI3T1.DLL file in the following folders:
C:\Programs Files\MS Works
C:\Programs Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof

The paragraph(s) at the bottom of the article gives an explanation of the value and other info:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;224176

MORE INFORMATION
The value data for the SharedFilesDir registry value should point to the folder that contains the Proof folder. The Proof folder contains the Csapi3t1.dll file.

In order for the Spelling checker to work, the software needs a dictionary to compare words against. However, Outlook Express is offered as a downloadable product, and it does not include its own dictionary. Outlook Express does can use another programs dictionary, such as Microsoft Word, to check the spelling of text. Without another program's dictionary to access, Outlook Express cannot use the spelling checker.

Do you have a dictionary (*.DIC) file on your PC? Mine is called "Custom.dic" located in the following folder.
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof
[You will need to allow "Hidden files" to be seen under Folder Options to find/view it.]
