Andrew

I am using WinXP Pro w/SP1 installed and all of the
updates applied. I have a seperate partition for my
programs but I don't want to have to tell everything I
install to install to a different partition than the
C:\Program Files and some programs don't give you that
option so they install to the C:\ drive on their own. I
changed the program files directory in the registry to
reflect where I want my programs to install and now
Outlook Express will not work.

I get two error messages; "Outlook Express could not be
started. The application was unable to open the Outlook
Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory
or your disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for
further assistance. (0x8007007E,126)" and "Outlook
Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not
be initialized. Outlook Express may not be installed
correctly."

The only information on this I have found has been:
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 296969; which refers
to OE and Win2000 when changing the program directory.
It says to modify the shortcuts to point to the correct
locations.

I have changed shortcuts, modified some other things, and
tried to start OE straight from it's program folder and
none of this has worked. If I change the program files
directory back to the default of C:\Program Files then OE
will work, but none of my other shortcuts will work
unless I modify them and then I'm back with the problem
of being able to easily control where programs are
installed.

Any suggestions? Tips? or another solution to this
problem?

Any responses and help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the link, I haven't found any info yet but
there is a lot of good stuff at that site. I'm going to
keep looking around there.

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

What is the path to your message store? Does it reflect the move? My
message store has been on an alternate share partition for years with no
issues. Good luck!

As for the MSOE.DLL error message, OE needs to be reset.

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 urlmon.dll. Then go to:
IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Reset Web Settings.

Also, make the modification here to reflect as well, use as an example:

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Scroll down to
URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol/Advanced/Edit.

Under Application used to perform action it should read:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

/top10faqs.htm

My message store is on a different partition. For
example: D:\outlook\myemail\store.dbx I've had it there
for a while now, but this is the first time I've tried
having programs install to a different partition other
than C:\

I'm going to check the other stuff you have mentioned, I
appreciate your input and help.

Thanks
-Andrew

When you change the default program files directory (registry value), the
Windows system file protection "restore" Outlook to be located at
"%programfilesdir%\Outlook Express", perhaps some .ini files or registry
values are always pointing to the primary location...
I had the problem, but I can't remember how i fixed it... (search & replace
in the registry, I think...)
IE had almost the same problem (can't launch), resolved by erasing history,
temps etc...

hope this help...
