If I try to open the Sent or Drafts folder in Outlook
Express I get the message "Outlook Express has
encountered a problem and will be closed". I also
encounter this behavior when trying to attach a document
to a letter. I can send mail and the Inbox is not giving
me any trouble. I have a unfinished message saved in the
Drafts folder I need to finish and send.

Sent Items and Drafts are probably corrupt.
In OE go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder and see where OE is
storing its' data.
Close OE.
Go to the store folder with Windows Explorer. With Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3
Windows Explorer will have to be set to show hidden files and folders.
Move Drafts.dbx and Sent Items.dbx to an empty Windows folder. OE will
build new files when it reopens.
You can use this tool to extract the messages from the old DBX file:
DBXtract (free): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/
The messages can be dragged from a Windows folder back into an OE folder in
OE's Folder List.
In the future do not use the default folders to store messages. Move them
to user created folders.
