Hi all,

Any ideas why OE consistantly reports 5 times as many messages as there
really are? This happens every time and it's always a factor of 5.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Windows version?

Is it OE's New Mail Notification or that of the WinXP Welcome Screen?

Sorry; Windows XP Pro (SP1). It's OE (v6) itself showing the incorrect
message count. This only seems to happen on my IMAP connection. In the same
session I also have a POP connection. This one counts correctly.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=227928 deals with this problem but the
fix (upgrade to OE5.5) certainly doesn't apply.

Try the suggested workaround:

1. Tools>click on Synchronize.

2. Click on Send/Receive on toolbar.

3. Open a non-IMAP folder and then return to the IMAP folder containing new
messages.

....or configure OE such that it (1) doesn't open to the IMAP inbox and/or
(2) doesn't Send/Receive on Startup.

....or Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default
Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity
(File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages
from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage
Identities).

....or there's a problem with the IMAP server.

YMMV.

Thanks very much, I'll give all these a try.

This only seems to happen on my IMAP connection.

Try activating a troubleshooting log for IMAP for clues?

(Alt-T,O,Ctrl-Backtab,I)

Note: previous experience has shown that the IMAP.log
has one of the more extensive traces available.
Unfortunately, I don't have an IMAP account and I don't think
that there are many here who know how to interpret its log.
In general they are most useful when you have two traces
to work from, one which logs a system which had desired results
and another which logs the problem case.

Good luck

I've now deleted and recreated the both the IMAP account AND the
identity. I have also telneted into unix and cleared the actual mailbox of
the IMAP header message. I am now down to TWO times the proper new message
count.

This bad count is on the bottom right of the OE main window. When I
highlight the inbox (with new messages) the counts are correct. Also if I
highlight "Outlook Express" (top left) the main dialog also shows the
correct count. Any ideas why the bottom right shows incorrectly? Most odd.
