My mother forwards me emails with pictures, and when I get them the box is
empty with a red "x" in the upper left of the box. What should I do to her
computer to fix this?

Thanks,

Eddie G

For the Sender.
From OE HELP:

[[To insert a picture into a message:
1.. Click the place in the message where you want the image to appear.
2.. On the Insert menu, click Picture, and then click Browse to
find the image file.
3.. Enter Layout and Spacing information for the image file as needed.
Notes
If you cannot select the Picture command, make sure HTML
formatting is turned on by clicking the Format menu in the message
window and then clicking Rich Text (HTML). A black dot appears by the
command
when it is selected.
If message recipients are not able to view your inserted images,
on the Tools menu, click Options. Click the Send tab, click HTML
Settings, and then make sure that Send pictures with messages is
selected. Then resend your message.
To insert a background picture into your message, in the message
window, on the Format menu, point to Background, and then click Picture.
Click
the Browse button to search for the file you want to use.]]

First thing to try is to set your firewall to a lower settings. If that does
not work then go to IE\Properties\Advanced\Multimedia and make sure Show
Pictures is checked. If that does not do anything then do the following.

Go to Start | Run and type this command regsvr32 /i shdoc401.dll After a bit
it should come back with a message that the DLL was registered.

If that doesn't fix it open regedit.exe and navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (note the dot before jpg) For Content Type is, it
should say "image/jpeg" Same for .jpe and .jpeg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif For
Content Type is, it should say "image/gif

This could also be a simple issue of the images being sent
in a propriatry format? (eg: exclusive to original software
that produced them?).
Ask your mother to save and send images as traditional and
universally compatible jpeg..................
Also how is she sending the images?
From a web-based email account? And she is on dial-up?
(The image file size maybe too large?)
Or From browser email client? (Outlook Express etc)
Another example is if images are from a digital camera,
many have software that indicates they can be selected
direct from the cameras memory to be sent, the option
usually being simply "email", if so..................
Ask your Mother to save to a folder in a compatible and
filesize-friendly format -jpeg is ideal.
Then to compose email and use "attach" option to locate
and attach the image file.

AFAIK, my mother gets messages forwarded to her with pictures that she can
see. When she forwards them to me I get the box with a red X. When I get
email with pictures and send them to her, SHE gets the boxes with a red X.
We both are using OE and both have cable internet.

Have you noted that when you receive the emails with "attached" images,
at top of preview pane is the security warning that the images have
been blocked? By clicking on the warning the images will display.
I think this is Windows security but need more info.
Are the images inbedded? (Example, a web page)
Or are they sent as attachments?

No security message at the top of the screen, and the images are imbedded.

Try this:
Open Outlook Express
Click Tools/Options
In the dialog that appears click the "Security" tab
Locate heading: "Download images" -
REMOVE tick from: "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail"
Click the "Apply" button, followed by the "OK" button.
Close all windows
Reopen Outlook Express
Click on one of the problematic emails, are the images now viewable?
If so, it was a security setting but please note it is not adviseable to
have this specific security option permenantly disabled...........
