Hello, All!

I recently installed XP Pro and updated with SP-2 and other updates. When I
tried to run OE I get the following messages:

"Unable to open OE message store (and there is a reference 0x8007007E,
126)."

Hitting OK results in a message that MDOE.DLL could not be initialized.

Suggestions to fix?

Thanks.

Colonel Blip.

Hi,

Click start/run, type "regsvr32 msoe.dll" (without the quotes, and it's
msoe.dll, not mdoe.dll) and click ok. See if this helps.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/directdb.htm

Errors in DIRECTDB.DLL or MSOE.DLL generally indicate corruption in the
message store.
Start by moving Folders.dbx to an empty Windows folder (with OE closed).
Note: the DBX files are hidden in Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3. You will lose
your folder hierarchy and the lists of newsgroups on the news servers, but
it might get you into OE.

If that doesn't do it then move all of the DBX files to the same folder as
Folders.dbx (again with OE closed). You should now get into OE. Try
importing the messages from
the folder you moved the DBX files to. If you can't, you can use this tool
to extract the messages:

DBXtract ($5):
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/

Note: It can take a long time (days with really large folders).

The messages can then be dragged from the Windows folder back into a folder
in an open instance of OE.

Um, he just reinstalled and couldn't open OE. Ergo, no messages to worry
about.

Hi Colonel Blip,

The install of Outlook Express is likely corrupted. This can happen after
upgrading and files from a previous version are left to conflict with newer
files.

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

From an older KB article (Msoe.dll could not be loaded)

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if there are different versions of Outlook Express
files located in the C:\Program Files\Outlook Express folder because of the
installation or uninstallation of different Outlook Express versions.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, back up your Outlook Express data, and manually
remove and reinstall Outlook Express.

Although this is for w2k I thought it might work on my XP. I did change the
ProgramFilesDir pointer in the registry to something other than the system
drive (in my case the OS is on D:\). I restored my initial SP-2 slipstreamed
image before adding any applications and OE worked. However, every image
after that, incorporating other changes such as running a Windows update
run, adding applications, etc. will not run OE. I'm sure something is
pointing wrong because of the ProgramFilesDir change but changing it back
didn't help either.

Thanks.

I think I know in general how I created this problem, but not how to get out
of it. After installing XP and SP-2 I changed ProgramFilesDir before
installing any applications. I wanted them in a different drive than my OS.
It was only after installing drivers, apps and the like that I got around to
checking OE. Along the way I had made 3 ghost images of my OS so I started
restoring some of them to see if I could pinpoint the problem.

Hi Colonel Blip,

This Microsoft KB article might provide the right clue. Good luck.

Not the solution, unfortunately.

The shortcut is pointed correctly; I've even tried starting directly while
in the folder itself.

Thanks.

The only way I ever got OE back working was to run a repair using my
original XP SP-2 slipstreamed CD.

Thanks.
