I have two problems using OE 6 as my newsreader program (as part of Outlook
2000).

1) I no longer get the option to save an attachment or view it - it opens
up in the appropriate program. This dialogue box has disappeared and I
would like to restore it.

2) When using the "save attachments" option (clicking on paper clip icon)
it defaults to the C:\Documents\settings ..... etc folder every time and
will not remember the folder I use. I have amended the line in the registry
for this but it only allows anything to be saved once and then it deletes
the last character, defaulting to the C:\Documents\settings ..... etc folder
once more.

TIA

1)
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Folder Options | File Types tab | Highlight the file type |
Advanced button | Check: "Confirm open after download" | OK | Apply | OK
2)
Start | Run | Type: regedit | OK

Navigate to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{Your unique ID #}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
Name: Save Attachment Path
Type: REG_SZ
Data: (Mine) C:\Documents and Settings\WESLEY P.
VOGEL\Desktop\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Note all the \\\'s
There is a bug in OE or one of the updates, it eats the last character of the path. This is the
work around. The \\\'s get eaten. Eventually these will have to be replaced.

Hint: Run AVG Control Center and turn off E-mail scanning. This can cause problems.
From Tom Koch:
E-mail scanning is [not necessary to protect your computer if you still have ..your AV program...
running in the background and scanning executable files as they are opened. In fact, the only real
reason to use email and download scanning is to make you feel more secure.]
